Which films do you think are underrated? Outstanding films that have made little or no impact and disappeared without a trace?
For me, the one that springs to mind is Dead Man
I read an article, not so long ago, which explained why Dead Man was the greatest American movie of the nineties. Whilst I don’t quite share that opinion, I do rate this as one of the best
When you look at the cast, which includes Johnny Depp, Lance Henriksen, Robert Mitchum, John Hurt and Billy-Bob Thornton, and the fact that it must surely be Johnny Depp’s finest movie and performance, you have to wonder why the film is practically unheard of.
Has anybody else seen it? If so, what are your thoughts? And what other movies do you feel are criminally underrated?

I've not seen it, nor have I heard about it until now, but I will make an effort to find it. Sounds like a stunner.
A film that I always feel is criminally underrated is Withnail & I. Now, everyone who's seen the film loves it, but not enough people have seen it for my liking. It is seriously the fucking funniest film I have ever seen, very intelligent and my personal number one film of all time. I guess part of the beauty of the film is that it only has a cult following, but nevertheless, I share it with friends as often as possible in an attempt to convert them to the appreciation of a pure classic.
If anyone is looking for a film to watch, well, I've never steered you people wrong on this sort of thing before. Check it out.

I've heard of Dead Man, but I've never got a chance to see it. I remember a few years back, a guy at the library was telling me about it and how good it was. I don't know why I didn't pick it up then, oh, I think that's when I was on my Sopranos kick and was watching all of the episodes from the first season, lol.
But as far as underrated, I'd have to say Mallrats. Kevin Smith even apologized for it after making it, but I think it's a very funny movie. It's not as good as Clerks or Chasing Amy, but I think it's a very fine film that gets overlooked sometimes, even by the movie's director, lol.

The two Kevin Smith films I have seen (Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Dogma) were fucking awful, so I might give that a miss.

Legends of the Fall. It's with Brad Pitt & Anthony Hopkins and it's a tale of three brothers and their father living in the remote wilderness of 1900s USA and how their lives are affected by nature, history, war, and love. It won an academy award for best cinematography, although that doesn't give it great recognition.

Yeah Of, some people aren't big fans of Smith's work, as evident from his box office numbers, but he's one of my favorite directors, I guess because I can relate to his humor so much.
I've never heard of Withnail and I but I'll have to check it out. Is that a British film?
And I don't know if this movie is underrated or not, but has anyone seen the movie "Man Bites Dog"? It's a French movie, and it's fucking hilarious. It's a mockumentary about a killer.

Tremendously overrated film, in my opinion. However, I do have a soft spot for "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back". Especially the part where Mark Hammill (as Cock Knocker, mind you . . . ;D ) punches Jason Mewes in the balls. Simple, I know . . . but it's very effective when coupled with Mewse's dialogue in response: ". . . & I just got punched in the motherfuckin' nuts by a dude named Cock Knocker!"

Let's just put it this way: to avoid seeing that film again, I'm willing to take a shot in the mouth.

Yeah, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back did give me a few chuckles. Dogma had a lot of potential to produce some good laughs, but the movie was really just shit.

Couldn’t agree more about Withnail & I.
So underrated that if people asked me to name five great comedies, I might overlook it myself, but it really is hilarious and well worth checking out.
Another film would be The Spanish Prisoner
Extremely complex movie directed by David Mamet, about double-crosses and the like, which may or may not have been the best film of 1998 (tied with American History X). Would be very high on my list of movies with twist/shock endings, maybe even at the top. Steve Martin has a significant role in this movie, but not a comedy role.
Essentially it revolves around a research engineer who invents something called ‘The Process’ and becomes a movie about “who can I trust?”. It fucks with your head a bit and features some of the very best twists and turns I’ve seen in any film.
Sheer genius.

What About Bob?
Hilarious movie with Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss. One of my favorite Murray movies.

Coach Carter
A very good basketball drama starring Samuel L. Jackson.

Kung Pow: Enter The Fist - Just because I almost pissed myself laughing when I was watching it. The dubbing, the physical comedy and the deranged storyline make this film absolutely brilliant to me. Just awesome and people should really take a look at this absolute gem of a film, seeing as most people who know about the film hate it. Sure, it's not the cleverest film in the World, to me is was HI-LAR-IOUS!! Inspirational, to say the least, to my whacky brand of humour. Sort of like Family Guy as well, with the oddness of the film...

Nathan, I'm with you on the Spainsh Prisioner. That was an excellent movie, and probably Mamet's best work, but his other films are damn good as well. But I remember renting that movie just because I saw Steve Martin was in it, and I was wowed with how good it was. It's a shame that smart movies like that aren't very successful.

Many comedies are underatted. I don't here much about Almost Heroes or Mallrats, both of which I found to be funny.

I don't think Mallrats is necessarily underrated,. due in part to the fact that it's not really that good a film to begin with, however, I do agree that it was fecking hilarious. Jason Lee, pwnes, as does Ben Affleck when he's having the piss took out of him.
