Another underrated film, in my view, is Belly…
Starring DMX, Nas, Method Man and directed by Hype Williams (the bloke that does all the rap music videos) this movie was destined to fail.
With three of the most successful rappers of all-time and a man made famous for glossy, over-the-top rap videos, Belly appeals to the young, hip-hop generation of bling wearers and chavs.
If you enjoyed The Fast & The Furious, Exit Wounds, Rush Hour and Bad Boys, you’ll hate Belly. This explains why every mention of it on the IMDb is negative.
It doesn’t feature car chases, stunts in every scene, explosions and all other the varieties of shite that appear in those above mentioned films.
It attempts to tell a story about two life-long friends (Nas and DMX) from the projects of New York, who turn to crime as a way of life. Years later, for various reasons, one of them (Nas) wants to break away from the crime lifestyle and settle down with his family, whilst the other (DMX) embraces the lifestyle, looking to become a big-time player in the criminal underworld.
As the two go their separate ways, they encounter various problems from the past that inevitably bring them back together, ending with the one who wanted to pursue a crime lifestyle embracing God, whilst the other ends up shooting a bunch of people.
It isn’t the most original concept of all-time, with obvious similarities to Boyz In The Hood and almost every gangster movie, but I enjoyed it and felt it was much better than it probably should have been.
Sadly, the people who might actually appreciate it are turned off as soon as the look at the DVD cover. This explains why there are no positive remarks about it on the IMDb.
As a result, the movie stood no chance.

Many comedies are underatted. I don't here much about Almost Heroes or Mallrats, both of which I found to be funny. I don't think Mallrats is necessarily underrated,. due in part to the fact that it's not really that good a film to begin with, however, I do agree that it was fecking hilarious. Jason Lee, pwnes, as does Ben Affleck when he's having the piss took out of him. I don't look for good films in comedies. Thats what I watch Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, and The Godfather for. I look for funny/hilarious things in comedies. Its not a good film, as 95% aren't, but it serves its purpose as a comedy, it's hilarious. And Jason Lee is hilarious in it, much better than any other role he's ever taken on film.

Right . . . thanks, coolcool. Should have figured that would have been the right thing to do. I do have one more question, however . . . & that would pertain to Kurt-fucking-Loder. What in God's name is he doing in this film . . . & what role could he possibly play?

I am not entirely sure, as I have never heard of him, but there is a scene where a news report (regarding drugs) is shown, and DMX watches the whole report.

Dead Man's Shoes
The film is set in the midlands and is directed by Shane Meadows. He also wrote the script along with the star Paddy Considine. It's won awards but I never know anybody who has seen it. Here's the plot:
The story revolves around the character of Richard (Considine), a soldier returning to his small home town in the Peak District. Considine's character has returned home to exact revenge on his mentally disabled younger brother Anthony's (Toby Kebell) tormentors who are also Richard's former friends.
Richard and Anthony camp at an abandoned farm above the town, their reminiscences of childhood interspersed with flashbacks of Anthony's torment at the hands of the town's youth, and Richard's subsequent revenge on them.
The film sometimes stutters and early on there is an overuse of music. However the gritty realism of the movie along with the great performances is worth while. It's a little gory but worth watching for the shocking twist ending. One that I didn't even see coming.
A little gem of British cinema, maybe not to everyone's taste but worth a try.

Which films do you think are underrated? Outstanding films that have made little or no impact and disappeared without a trace? For me, the one that springs to mind is Dead ManI read an article, not so long ago, which explained why Dead Man was the greatest American movie of the nineties. Whilst I don’t quite share that opinion, I do rate this as one of the best When you look at the cast, which includes Johnny Depp, Lance Henriksen, Robert Mitchum, John Hurt and Billy-Bob Thornton, and the fact that it must surely be Johnny Depp’s finest movie and performance, you have to wonder why the film is practically unheard of. Has anybody else seen it? If so, what are your thoughts? And what other movies do you feel are criminally underrated? I loved it and I'm not big on Westerns. It's an over-all very solid movie. The directing is great, the story is beautiful, a lot of research went into it, the acting is top notch. I agree about it being Depp's best performance and Gary Farmer as Nobody was fantastic as well. I loved the whole William Blake aspect, as well as the dark comedy elements. Even the soundtrack was good, thanks to Neil Young. Plus, Iggy Pop being in it was sort of a cherry on top. Anyway, I'm going with Dark City, similar to The Matrix in some aspects, except that it handles the story infinitely better. I'm surprised that it hasn't gotten a huge cult following yet.

The Tao of Steve
I watched it yesterday, and it's actually a very, very good film. Naturally, being American-made, it suffers from all sorts of horrid cliches, but beneath that, the driving force in the story is very good.
The Tao of Steve itself is absolutely fucking brilliant.

Devil In a Blue Dress this starred Denzel Washington and Don Cheadle and was a film noir that recieved little to no attention from audiences but wide critical acclaim
Equilibirum this had the likes of Christinan Bale, Taye Diggs, Sean Bean and Angus MacFayden and was not released by Miramax on account of risking it being a bomb. Since its release on the home video and DVD market, it has achieved cult like status and has many new fansites and a high rating on IMDB. This is one of my favorite movies and always sparks the question..what if?
