I wanted to get your opinion on Johnny Cash (not to exclude anyone, but especially guys like Don, Nathan, Of, and Brightside). He is without a doubt my favorite artist of all time. His story telling ability is amazing, and all of that shit. So before I start sucking his dick, go ahead and give me your opinion. (I don't want to hear from faggy emos who saw "Walk the Line", and think that it is a valid representation of his musical workings)

He was the definition of the American Dream. Growing up on a small farm then making it big. In my opinion he is one of America's Most Greatest Songwriters. I personally love his music my favorite song is his hit "Ring of Fire".

Well, if I may be completely & totally honest . . . & I'm sure this won't come as a shock to some of you . . . I'm not really too familiar with him, Bill. I've heard a handful of his songs throughout my 21 years, but I will say this; "Hurt" is one of the most emotional songs I've ever heard in my life. It makes me tear up almost every time I hear it (especially when you think of the fact that it was the song used in the Eddie Guerrero tribute video), & it's just really easy to identify with. One of my all-time favorites, is that song . . . With that being said, however; what songs of his would you guys recommend I listen to?

I love his music. When he came out with Hurt ( he actually didn't write that song, a band called Nine Inch Nails did), the music along w/ the MV proved how he still had it at a very old age. I love Ring of Fire, Walk the Line, When The Man Comes Around ect. One of the best musicians to ever walk the earth.

While I have respect for Cash and realise how important he is to songwriting history, I don't like his music. I find it annoying and often insipid, like a cross between Elvis Presley and a backwater hillbilly.
Just not my cup of chai.

I think he might be my favorite singer, but I'm not sure. I can't decide between him, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Syd Barrett, & Leonard Cohen. They're all number one to me.
Anyway He's not the greatest musician ever, but his lyrics are pretty damn cool.

Johnny Cash is awesome. Seriously.
There's a song that U2 did with him for their Zooropa album (The Wanderer), and when they covered it for a tribute thing, they just couldn't match it.

In fact, fuck you, I'm not arguing in a thread for a good musician.
I really enjoyed the duet with Nick Cave for 'I'm So Lonesome, I Could Cry'. Lumped two of my favourite songwriters together for a good old slow song.
