Bad news for Dana White and a lot of MMA fans. With the exception of Josh Barnett, Fedor has beaten the best PRIDE has to offer, which is pretty much the best any promotion has to offer. A switch to UFC, however, would’ve given him a chance to beat Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski and prove, beyond doubt, that he is the best in the world today. I’m getting fed up of hearing all this bandwagoners talking up Sylvia like he’s worth a damn.
The recent signings of Filipovic and Rampage Jackson have done a great deal for UFC’s credibility. Although he has yet to debut, Filipovic is the best heavyweight on the UFC roster and Rampage may or may not be the best light heavyweight, depending on his fight with Chuck Liddell. But without Fedor and the likes of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Wanderlei Silva and Mauricio Shogun, it’s hard to consider UFC the best promotion out there.
PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko will not follow in the footsteps of Mirko Filipovic, who last week officially departed the Japanese mixed martial arts organization for North America and the UFC. On its Web site, PRIDE revealed Emelianenko agreed to a contract extension that will keep the Russian star in a ring for the immediate future.
"I am happy to continue my career in PRIDE and look forward to adding to my unbeaten streak as champion," the 30-year-old Emelianenko, widely regarded as the top heavyweight in the world, told Pridefc.com. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
In December, Sherdog.com reported that Emelianenko (25-1-0, 1 NC) would face Jeff Monson March 3 on a bodogFIGHT-promoted card in St. Petersburg, Russia. While that fight is still scheduled, bodogFIGHT plans to push the Emelianenko-Monson contest back to April.
