David Beckham will leave Real Madrid and join Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy at the end of the season. The 31-year-old former England captain will sign a five-year deal, reportedly worth £128m.
Beckham said: "This week Real asked me to make a decision regarding their offer to extend my contract.
"After considering several options to stay in Madrid or join other major British and European teams, I have decided to join LA Galaxy."news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/6248835.stm

Beckham claims he's going to go for the benefit of football.
He also claims he turned down offers from major european clubs.
He's being paid 260 million dollars over 5 years. Such charity!

Not just hilarious, beyond hilarious.
Americans, how does it feel being pwned by the legend that is David Beckham, btw? The guy is shot as a player, his credibilty going down in flames and his maketability on the wane, yet he was still able to claim a contract that puts Kobe, Dirk, A-Rod, D-Wade and other such American superstars firmly in their place in a sport that Americans couldn't give a shit about! My God, do you guys have no dignity?
I mean Beckham stands to earn $1million a week! That's $5,952 every hour--- and that's every hour of the week, not just the hours he works in! So, asleep for eight hours, Beckham will have earnt more than the average American in a year! This is for a footballer past his prime, not too far away from retirement! Zidane and co must be wishing they'd made the switch Stateside in the twighlight years of their career too! But of course, as Beckham is keen to point out, he did not go for the money!
Like I said at the top, beyond hilarious.

Will he make more than Tiger?

Will he make more than Tiger? From his sport alone, easily. Tiger's earnings through Golf never top the $10-12million mark (and that's in a hugely successful year), most of Tiger's income are from his deals with Nike and other such endeavors. I'm not sure what the exact overall figure Tiger makes a year is, but it wouldn't surprise me to see Beckham ahead him this time next year. I actually wanted Beckham to stay. I like him. Ditto. This is a black day for Beckham and a black day for football.

I'd say he's made a killing for what is essentially going out to stud.
Anyway Brightside, I wouldn't call it being pwned, as I'm actually fairly confident both parties acknowledge that they're just using him for kneejerk gate reciepts and tv deals (and judging from the snobbish LA crowd, it could very well work.)
P.S.: From golf and endorsements combined, Tiger Woods made about $80 million last year.

Anyway Brightside, I wouldn't call it being pwned, as I'm actually fairly confident both parties acknowledge that they're just using him for kneejerk gate reciepts and tv deals (and judging from the snobbish LA crowd, it could very well work.) See, Bourica, that's where you're wrong. The money they've thrown at Beckham is beyond farcical; the way they (Beckham and the compnay that owns LA Galaxy), and the way many American soccer fans who I've been discussing this with for the last 3-4 hours see it is that the only reason they're throwing this money Beckham's way is that he has the marketability, the commercial value and the fan-base to be a kind of messiah for soccer in the US. With Beckham's popularity the selling of LA Galaxy shirts will increase tenfold, the number of international television comapnies fighting for the rights to the game's will go up and thus auctioning will ensue and they're banking on Beckham's image to promote the game at a grass roots level. There is no way, any businessman worth his slat would throw this amount of money at a player for a "knee-jerk" gate receptis only, not by ba long shot. They are going to fail, that's pretty much set in stone, but I'll give them credit for trying. Becham, on the other hand, has lost a fair amount of my respect. What the MLS really needs in order to move forward is some decent European coaches to start managing out here to raise the standard of the game. Beckham alone, will do nothing. I thought it was somehting around that figure. David Beckham will definitely be the highest paid sportsman in the world come next year.

It's as clear as day Beckham has been bought to try and raise the popularity of football in the states. As for Beckham himself he just wants a nice place to live and shitloads of cash while he plays matches at a level that shouldn't give his body too many problems. It's nothing new:
Pele - New York Cosmos Johan Cruyff - LA Aztecs & Washington Diplomats Bobby Moore - San Antonio Thunder & Seattle Sounders Franz Beckenbauer - New York Cosmos Hristo Stoichkov - Chicago Fire & DC United
I'm just wondering how many of those teams are still around.

That was the NASL not MLS, hence, none of those franchises exist anymore. Histro Stoichkov's former clubs were and still are part of the still going MLS.

I don't watch football, but I know that the MLS is a poor excuse for the sport(as told by my German and Dutch friends). After watching an Arsenal game, I was actually sucked in, unlike MLS. So for one of the best in the world, I'm told as well, David Beckham, to join this league, I could easily see this being considered a black day for football.

When Beckham was at his prime, was he really the soccer god most people try to say he is? In a word, no. In more than a word, he was overrated and[/i] underrated in equal measures. I'd explain it to you in more deatil if I didn't think it was a waste of time.

I'm not sure how we are pwned by him here. Sure those who pay to go see him play will be but that constitutes a small amount of the population because nobody cares about the MLS over here. This is the first thing I've heard about the MLS in probably months and I really don't care about this. Another thing is that Beckham will be lucky to see all of this money because I get the feeling that the MLS will go under within 3 years. From 1996-2004, they lost $350 million dollars and that was when no player was allowed to be paid more than $1 million. One of their big franchises, DC United, was sold for $33 million and that was with the previous biggest attraction the MLS had in Freddy Adu. Who knows, maybe I'm wrong here but Beckham isn't the celebrity over here that he is in other parts of the world and I would be shocked if this works out for either the MLS or Beckham.

Englishman, who's abilities and relevance as a footballer are on the decline goes to America and strikes a deal, in a sport that no American gives half a shit about, that puts your biggest sports stars to shame. How is that not being pwned by the world's greatest[/b] sport?
I mean, he's not even in the top 50 best players in Europe, never mind the world. The guy can't even get into a team as shabby as the English national team and you lot are willing to pay him astronomical sums to perform in a sport that you don't care about! Can I make this any clearer?
Exactly, that's where the investors see most of the money coming from; the foreign market. I know you're American, Stinger, but the world does not start and end with you guys, you know.
However, I do agree that this gamble is destined to fail.

We don't have any foreign market and that's not going to change with one guy. And like I said, I would be surprised if Beckham sees half that money.
