I preferred Buffy up until the point I had watched each season of Angel and realised the characters and the Whedon situations he brings about worked better in Angel.
The first time season 5 was broadcasted, I didn't like what i saw, but recently as it has been televised on Sci Fi (UK, maybe US?) I've come to see the superb content. It's a more adult, more fulfilling series with a better team and a greater main character to show for it. "Not Fade Away" was a brilliant send off for the show.

I went with Angel. Better story/background, had a set villian (rather than a villian for the season...not that that is a bad thing) and Connor kicks arse on so many levels

My sentiments pretty much match Moeru. Although I did drift away from Buffy toward the latter seasons and was a fan of Angel during it's original run on Sky One. "Not Fade Away" was a great way to end the series.

Angel.
Except for Connor. He sucked, like, fifty dicks.

Season 4 Buffy - when Angel became Angelous, Spike came into his own and each and every character pretty much went up about 20 times in interest value - owns all.
However, as an overall package, I go for Angel; a little less contrived, a lot better acted and just a far more intriguing and adult premise on the whole.

I faded in and out of both, they stopped being about Vampires and became about demons. And that episode with the unstoppable monster heel that Buffy had to steal an RPG to destroy was a little OTT.

It was the only way forward, really. By the end of about the third season, I was fairly confident I could dick the average vampire. There was no way back from such a de-push.

Very true. I also marked when Spike killed the chosen kid at the start of the second series. It was total heel pwnage.

What a rebel. And he nailed Buffy.

Yes, his attempt at a cockney accent was screaming "gimmick change," but what would he have been without the leather coat and cummed-down hair?

Most likely.
